When ferrets are sick, they may not want to go to all the work of eating their food or tearing up their flesh. Older ferrets may have bad teeth, and eating too much cabbage can hurt you. So, I feed them duck soup.
What is duck soup?
First, duck soup usually does not contain duck. As the story goes, a ferret named Lucky Ducky was sick and his humans fed him “soup” while he got better. Since then, any complementary soft food has been called duck soup.
When should you feed the ferret duck soup?
It’s okay to give your ferret most duck soup as a treat. It’s a good idea to give him some when he’s healthy, so he gets used to it and doesn’t mind it when he really needs it.
Additionally, you should feed this mixture to your fuzzy when he’s sick and has stopped eating or if he’s really old and not eating enough.
Where do you get duck soup?
You can buy something at the pet store called duck soup. I have never tried. He. She. Most people I know make their own soup for their fluff. Most people seem to have their own recipes. Here are some of them
Chicken baby food
Gerber chicken baby food is easy to digest and a decent food for mystery food. Most rodents lick it off without much persuasion. Chicken baby food has the advantage that it comes in small packages, so not much will spoil at once. But once the jar is opened, you will need to refrigerate it.
Cable variety
Put the ferret food in a coffee grinder (or blender) and crush it. Place the kibble powder in an airtight container. When it’s time to feed your weasel, put a little bit of the food in a bowl and add enough water to hydrate it. You can even microwave it for a few seconds if you want. The advantages of this type of duck soup are that you don’t change the food on your ferret, and you can make as small an amount as you like without waste. I use this kind of duck chowder when I’m traveling with a sick ferret because it’s nice and portable.
the sweet kind
If you’re having trouble wanting to eat, this might be the way to go. Take 1 jar of chicken baby food and 1 container of collateral. Place it in a tightly closed container and shake the mixture. This mixture is sweet and almost any ferret would love to eat it. The disadvantage of this soup is that the mixture contains a fair amount of sugar to be sure, and the mixture will not last more than two days.
More traditional soup
Take a chicken. Put it in a giant bowl of water. Boil for a long time. Eventually the skin and meat will fall off the bones. Turn off the fire. Pick out the bones from the mixture. Get a hand mixer and blend the mixture. (You can put this stuff in a blender, but every time I tried it, I ended up boiling soup on my face. It hurts. Stick blenders are good.) Once the mixture is mixed, pour it into ice cube trays and freeze. When you need to fuel your mystery, take out one cube and heat it up in the microwave. Mix it up and feed the ferret.
Other things you might consider adding to your soup before you freeze it are olive oil or a little ground kibble.
